Deep Thoughts
“Play is a significant function; that is to say there is some sense in play, there is something ‘at play’ which transcends the immediate needs of human life and imparts meaning to the action.”
- Homo Ludens, Johan Huizinga
“Certainly everyone knows what play is not even if everyone can’t agree just what play is”
- Childs Play, J Barnard Gilmore, Psychologist
What is the relationship between the values of a game and the values in the real world?
How does play mediate communication?
Ideas culled from Rules of Play:
Design - an idea, a knowledge, a practice, a process, a product, a way of being
Design is the process by which a designer creates context to be encountered by a participant from which meaning emerges.
Designing game play is about conceiving and designing rules and structures that result in an experience.
Meaningful play emerges from interaction between players and the system of the game as well as the context in which the game is played - rules, play, culture
Games as subset of play - when play becomes formalized with set of rules
Rules - limit player action, explicit and unambiguous, shared by all players, fixed, binding, repetitive
Magic Circle - boundary/frame, playground, clock w/ beg & end, repeatable space, space both limited and limitless, finite space with infinite possibility
